Contrary to being a big, bombastic extravaganza, gazing in wonder at a lit Christmas tree is where many of us find the intimate wonder and magic of the Yuletide season.
We all know that the Rockefeller Centre Christmas Tree is not only the most magnificent Christmas tree in New York, but probably the world. Over 125 million people will likely come to stare in amazement at the 75 foot Norwegian Spruce being displayed at the plaza between West 48th and 51st Streets until the 7th of January.
Undeniably, no Christmas break to New York would be complete without a visit to the conifer and light spectacle. However, we’re really proud of our local connection, and suggest that if you’re planning a trip to the area you may also want to check out some of these ‘alternative’ New Jersey Christmas trees. Of course, if you rent a Hummer limo for your weekend away then it just might sprinkle all that much more magic on your Christmas getaway.
Palmer Square, Princeton
The Christmas tree at Princeton has been up since November, after a grand old lighting ceremony that saw the American Repertory Ballet perform The Nutcracker. At 65 foot the Norwegian Spruce is an impressive sight, made all the more dazzling by the 32,000 lights adorning it. The tree-mendous spectacle costs nothing to see, and is here until the end of the year.
Adventure Aquarium Christmas Celebration
Have you ever wondered how Christmas is celebrated under water? Well, no, probably not. Regardless, the Adventure Aquarium’s Christmas Celebration in Camden offers you the chance to find out. And their center piece? The world’s tallest underwater Christmas tree.
Located in their Shark Realm, the ‘tree’ is over 18 feet tall and is decorated with lights, bubbles, and corals and shells from around the world. Also worth seeing is Scuba Santa, snow, lights galore, live shows and of course, the two million gallons of water inhabited by aquatic life. On Saturdays, you can even meet ‘dry’ Santa for a photo op. The attraction dries up on the 30th of December.
Skylands Stadium Christmas Lights Show
With over 2 million lights on display, the Skylands Stadium Christmas Lights Show, Augusta has to be seen to be believed. There is so much to see here that they have had to make it a drive thru! Over the length of the 1 mile course you will see fairy light renditions of snowmen, reindeer and Santa Clause, as well as journeying through a magical tunnel of colors. There are even some ‘trees’ which become invisible whenever their lights aren’t flashing!
After the drive you can get a photo with Santa, warm up with some food and drink, partake in carnival games and even do some shopping at their indoor Winter Wonderland. Proudly boasting that they are open come rain, snow or shine, the attraction comes to a stop on December 30th.
